Choosing a box
Which bike box do I need?
The right bike box is the one your bike fits in without a fight and your airline will accept. Here’s what to check, and the details of the Bike Box Alan EasyFit, the hard-shell case in our fleet today.
Hard shell, soft bag or cardboard?
A hard-shell box has a rigid shell that takes the knocks, with the bike strapped in so it can’t move. A padded soft bag is lighter and packs down for storage. A cardboard bike carton is a one-way option that offers the least protection. The Bike Box Alan EasyFit we hire is a hard shell.
What to check on your bike
Three things decide the fit: handlebar width, frame size and wheel size. Wide flat bars and integrated cockpits are the usual sticking points — if the bars are wider than the box allows, they come off the stem and pack alongside the frame. Large frames may need the seatpost dropped or removed.
What to check with your airline
Compare the box’s outside dimensions and the packed weight (box plus bike plus anything else you put in) against your airline’s limits for a bike. The dimensions of the Bike Box Alan EasyFit are below.
The Bike Box Alan EasyFit
The EasyFit is a roomy hard-shell case that takes road, gravel, TT, triathlon and mountain bikes. There’s enough room inside that the seatpost and rear derailleur can normally stay on. Handlebars up to 50 cm wide stay on; wider than that they come off the stem and lie alongside the frame, and on some mountain bikes the front fork comes out. External size 133 × 94 × 50 cm. Hire is $20/day.
