What is bike box hire, and how does it work?

Bike box hire lets you rent a hard-shell bike travel case instead of buying one. You book online, collect the box, pack your bike, fly, and return the box to the same place when you’re back. Collection is currently from Manly, Sydney, and we’re adding independent bike shops ("hubs") in other cities as collection points.

Who is Bike Box Hire Aus?

Bike Box Hire Aus hires hard-shell bike boxes to cyclists flying with their bikes, from a base in Manly, Sydney. It is the Australian sister of Bike Box Hire UK, which has hired bike boxes through bike-shop hubs since 2021.

How much does it cost to hire a bike box?

A Bike Box Alan EasyFit costs $20 per day. The minimum hire is 7 days. Longer hires cost less per day: the first 10 days are charged at the full daily rate, each day after that at 50% of it, and the long-hire discount is capped at 25% of the hire. Where packing and rebuild are offered, packing is $160, rebuild is $160, and both together are $300. There’s no deposit. The total for your dates is shown before you pay.

Which bike box will I get, and will my bike fit?

We hire hard-shell bike boxes. The Bike Box Alan EasyFit takes road, gravel, TT, triathlon and mountain bikes; handlebars up to 50 cm wide can stay on, and wider ones come off the stem to pack. Each location’s page shows the box types it stocks, so you choose the box when you book.

How do I fly with my bike?

Hire a bike box, pack your bike into it (or book a packing service where it’s offered), and check it in with your airline. Airlines differ on bike fees, weight limits and how far ahead you need to tell them, so check your airline’s bike policy before you book your flight.

Where can I collect a bike box?

Do you offer a packing service?

Where a hub offers it, yes. Add packing ($160) when you book: drop your bike off and the hub packs it into the box ready to fly. You can also add a rebuild ($160), where the hub builds the bike back up from the box when you return, or both together for $300. Each location’s page shows which services it offers.

Can I cancel or extend my booking?

Cancellation is free up to 14 days before your collection date. If your trip runs long, you can extend your hire from your account when the box is free for the extra days. If it isn’t, email hello@bikeboxhire.com.au or call +61 421 021 532 and we’ll see what we can do.

Is there a discount for hiring more than once?

Yes. Book with an account and each completed hire counts towards your membership tier. The tiers take up to 25% off the daily box-hire rate, applied automatically at checkout, on top of the long-hire discount.
