Costs
How much does it cost to fly with a bike?
There are two costs to plan for when you fly with your own bike: what the airline charges to carry it, and the box it travels in.
1. The airline
Airlines treat bikes differently. Some carry a boxed bike as part of your checked baggage allowance; others charge an oversize or sporting-equipment fee on top. Weight limits differ too, and it’s usually cheaper to add baggage when you book than at the airport. Check your airline’s bike policy before you buy the ticket — our airline bike policies page is the place to start.
2. The bike box
A hard-shell case is the other cost. Buying one outright is a big outlay for something most riders use a few times a year and then have to store. Hiring a Bike Box Alan EasyFit costs $20/day, with no deposit. The minimum hire is 7 days.
Hiring vs buying
If you fly with a bike once or twice a year, hiring means no upfront cost, no storage and no maintenance, and you collect the box when you need it. Owning makes more sense if you travel very often and have room to store a large case. Our membership tiers also take up to 25% off the daily rate the more you hire.
Longer trips
The first 10 days of a hire are charged at the full daily rate and each day after that at 50% of it, with the long-hire discount capped at 25% of the hire. The total for your dates is shown before you pay.
